Red, Green & Merry: Your Guide to Picture-Perfect Holiday Outfits

One of the best things about holiday portraits? You get to dress up! 🎄✨

For this year's Holiday Mini Sessions with Kimberly Ogden Portraits, we're embracing the timeless colors of Christmas—rich reds, classic greens, warm neutrals, and plenty of holiday charm.

But if the thought of coordinating everyone's outfits has you wondering, "What are we all going to wear?!"—don't worry. I've got you!

I've put together some of my favorite Amazon outfit finds to make getting everyone dressed and photo-ready a little easier.

Start With a Color Palette

Rather than trying to find matching outfits for everyone, think coordinating, not matching.

A beautiful holiday palette might include:

❤️ Christmas Red – burgundy, cranberry, ruby, or classic red

💚 Christmas Green – forest, emerald, hunter, or sage

🤍 Neutrals – cream, ivory, beige, or tan

🤎 Warm accents – brown, camel, or cognac

The goal is to create visual harmony while allowing everyone's personality to shine.

Mom: Start With Your Outfit

My favorite styling tip? Choose Mom's outfit first.

Whether you love a gorgeous red dress, a classic green velvet skirt, or a cozy cream sweater, choose something that makes you feel beautiful and confident.

Once you've selected your outfit, pull colors and textures from it for everyone else.

And remember: you deserve to be in the photos, too! Don't put yourself last when choosing what to wear.

For the Girls

Holiday minis are the perfect excuse for a little twirl-worthy magic. ✨

Consider:

  • Velvet or courdoroy dresses in red, green, or burgundy
  • Classic tartan or Christmas plaid
  • Cream dresses with red or green accessories
  • Tulle skirts paired with cozy sweaters
  • Mary Janes, ballet flats, or festive boots

A velvet dress is especially beautiful for holiday portraits because it adds texture and photographs beautifully.

For the Boys

You don't have to go over-the-top festive to create a classic Christmas look.

Try:

  • Cream or white button-down shirts
  • Green or burgundy sweaters
  • Plaid shirts or trousers
  • Khakis or corduroy pants
  • Suspenders or a classic bow tie
  • Brown loafers or boots

Don't Forget Dad!

Dad doesn't have to wear a Christmas sweater—unless he's into that sort of thing! 😉

A classic combination of dark jeans or khakis + a button-down + sweater or cardigan creates a timeless look.

For a dressier style, try a burgundy or forest-green sweater layered over a crisp white shirt.

Think Texture

Here's a little photographer secret: texture makes portraits more interesting.

Velvet, cable knits, corduroy, wool, lace, linen, and soft knits all photograph beautifully and add dimension to your images.

This is also why I love the idea of incorporating velvet into your holiday wardrobe.

And if you love the look of velvet but don't want everyone wearing it, just add it to one or two outfits as an accent.

What to Avoid

A few simple guidelines will help keep the focus on your beautiful family:

❌ Everyone wearing the exact same color

You don't need everyone in red shirts!

❌ Large logos or busy graphics

They can distract from the faces and emotions we're capturing.

❌ Too many competing patterns

One or two patterns are beautiful. Five different patterns can become visually overwhelming.

❌ Extremely bright neon colors

They tend to compete with the rich, timeless Christmas palette.

❌ Being uncomfortable

This one is important! If your child can't move, play, or cuddle comfortably, it will show in the portraits.

The Magic Is in the Details

Once you've chosen your outfits, have fun with the little details.

Think:

🎀 Velvet bows

🧦 Festive socks

👞 Classic shoes

🎄 Tartan accessories

✨ Simple jewelry

❤️ Hair bows and headbands

You don't need a closet full of Christmas-themed clothing. A few thoughtful details are enough to make your portraits feel festive without looking overly themed.

Most Importantly…Choose What Feels Like YOU

Your family doesn't need to look like a catalog.

Maybe you're a velvet-dress-and-bow family. Maybe you're more comfortable in jeans and cozy sweaters. Maybe your toddler absolutely refuses to wear anything remotely fancy. 😂

That's okay.

The most beautiful portraits happen when your family feels comfortable, connected, and completely themselves.

I'll take care of the posing, lighting, and beautiful portraits.

You just bring your people—and your Christmas spirit. ❤️🎄
